Somewhere in Between

Mark Art

Starts in the Other Place On the 1st Feb 2011

I was born in 1981, and have always wanted to be an artist. I was involved in several art groups and endeavours from my teens to the present, most noticably The Chispa Mural Project in 1998-99 as well as local community centres and fund raisers for the lgbt community, (The Quilt of Hope a painted panel on behalf of the ucc lgbt society, 2001). I studied Archaeology and Classical Civilisations in UCC for several years, ending in 2006.

I have exhibited and made art in between life and lectures mostly, anywhere I could sit and draw. I like to paint the lines and shapes in everything, people, portraits, objects and overlap them, to see both together at the same time. I like to sew and make historical clothing for weekends when I go off and be a viking with like minded re enactors, as well as learning new art techniques and applications all the time. The art in this display may seem random but it represents pieces I have worked on between classes and relationships, commissions and idle time, most started but rarely finished as new ideas appeared to me, combining images and designs from older art forms, myths and music, with modern designs and incorporating them into my work. Though I like to present this in negative line imagery I am not bound to the idea and will work any idea the best way it will fit in my mind.

My Body is Braille for the Creeping Influences

Written by Manager on . Posted in Exhibits

The photographic series, “My Body is Braille for the Creeping influences” is an exhibition of black and white photos mounted on aluminium, each measuring 40 x 40 cm. It is collaboration between Josephine Spak (A), a performance artist and Tony Magner (Irl), visual artist.
The portraits and large close ups of the body explore the relationship between skin and memory, between permanent and impermanent marks left on the body.

The skin is like a storeroom of our memory, a vault of our buried experiences. It is the library of our impressions, the geography of our fragility.
You don’t have to search far. You don’t even have to search your memory: the surface of your brain is inscribed and so is the surface of your skin, perhaps it is the same process. Michelle Serres, 1985, le Cinq Sens, Paris

Each photo is printed in a limited series of seven and costs €350.

Ecology Abounds
Photographic Exhibition
September 2009

Our Cities are tightly packed with buildings, cars and people and almost hidden from our eyes and minds are the wildlife. Along river banks and ponds, in trees and rooftops birds and bees, insects and fish live out there lives alongside us humans. Nature splendid drama is playing right alongside you and me, we only need to look, and listen and enjoy a part of life that connects us all.

"Forgotten Solace"

“Forgotten Solace”

a photo exhibition by Grace O’Donoghue

Open from Sat, 13 July @ The Other Place Cafe

Wine and Cheese reception from 8pm, Sat 13 June.

Grace has mounted astonishing landscape photos of the Cork landscape, beautifully arranged on the white walls of The Other Place cafe–the reds, oranges, yellows, and blues really pop against the canvas of the cafe walls. “These colourful gems highlight the beauty of the countryside, that we often take for granted,” explains O’Donoghue, who is every bit as lovely as her art.

Be sure to check it out early, as pieces are available to buy–trust me, they won’t be available for long.
